The dove first appeared in Genesis 8:10-12, as a messenger for Noah, when it was sent out, and returned with a freshly plucked olive leaf in it’s beak, a sign that the waters had receded after the flood. In Leviticus 12:8, God’s law allowed a poor woman to substitute two doves for a lamb as a burnt offering. Therefore, for a poor person, the dove was equivalent to a lamb as an acceptable offering to the Lord. Finally, in Matthew the dove appeared as a symbol of the Holy Spirit after Jesus, the Lamb of God, was baptized by John in the Jordan River.
“As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on Him. And a voice from Heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with Him I am well pleased.”” (Matt. 3:16 ,17)
“I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star.”(Revelation 22:16)
“I see him but not now; I behold him but not near. A star will come out of Jacob. A sceptor will rise out of Israel” (Numbers 24:17)
